10 Tips to Avoid Designer’s Block

1. GET “LOOSE.”
In my experience, there is a danger in sitting down and trying to get right into a design (or drawing.) If the very first time your pencil hits paper you need to be drawing exactly what you’re intending to be your final piece of art – you’ll have a tendency to “tighten up.” You can literally feel your muscles tighten as you start to put down a hard crisp pencil line. As a designer if you don’t start out by getting loose, your brain tightens up on exactly what you think the final design should look like.

2. FIND INSPIRATION.
3. GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE “GAME.”
4. GIVE YOURSELF TIME.
5. HAVE FUN WITH A NEW TECHNIQUE OR TOY.
6. LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS.
7. BE AWARE OF YOUR DIFFICULTY LEVEL.
8. EAT A PROPER DIET.
9. GET YOUR SLEEP.
10. TAKE A WALK.

How to easily make Blood or Paint Splatters in Illustrator

I was reworking my Giant Robot magazine and the Gloomy Bear spreads, and I was getting sick of producing blood splatters with the pen tool, so I figured out a new way to do it. You can produce lots of them, with pseudo-random variations, in a few seconds each.

Step 1: Select the star tool. Option+Click somewhere on the artboard and give the star some properties. You can copy mine.

Step 2: Use the roughen Effect. Turn on the live preview with the checkbox, and tweak the values til you're satisfied.

Step 3: Make a few additional smaller splatters.

Step 4: If you need to, you can Expand Appearance, which will make it a regular path, rather than a star shape with Roughen applied to it.

...that the stuff we learned about AfterEffects two semesters ago could be used to make big bucks at Sony BMG's design department making videos like this, but apparently the same learned stuff will be useless in 2 more years. On one hand I feel like a well qualified designer ahead of the curve, on the other, I feel like our job will always be a full speed catch up game that you never win, you just keep playing. Not that that would be so bad. What the hell am I talking about? Watch the video.

Are we the generation of randomness and off-the-wallness in advertising?

I don't usually express too many negative views on media/advertising, but when I saw this, I had to. I'm not a fan of the weird/random/awkward art which has no story and nothing seems to happen for any particular reason. Sometimes it will mildly entertain us with it's strange juxtapositions and odd styling, but only because of it's novelty. And surely that novelty is just a fad. An example: most of what's on adult swim. Watch anything on adult swim, apart from Robot Chicken and Family Guy, and you'll see what I mean.

I think this commercial was trying to play into that trend; the awkward randomness, for lack of a better term. This is the first installment of a series of ads that Microsoft reportedly paid Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to be in.
